President’s Message- December 2024

January 6, 2025 by Rebecca Wood

The Importance of Volunteerism and Investing in Your Community

As we close out the year, it is a perfect time to reflect on the importance of volunteerism and giving back to our communities. Volunteering is one of the most fulfilling ways to invest in the people and organizations that make our communities thrive. It is not just about giving time—it is about contributing to something meaningful, helping others grow, and building a stronger, more vibrant society.

For me, leading Lancaster SHRM has been a tremendous volunteer experience. I have had the privilege to work alongside talented professionals who are equally committed to advancing our profession. But more importantly, I have seen firsthand how giving back enriches not just our organization, but the individuals who choose to get involved.

Volunteerism is about more than filling a role or ticking a box. It is about stepping outside your usual responsibilities and making an impact in a new and rewarding way. Whether it is mentoring, offering your expertise, or helping with community initiatives, your involvement matters.

As HR professionals, we understand the value of people—and our communities are no different. Investing in them through volunteer work fosters growth, connection, and shared success. As you plan for the year ahead, I encourage you to find a way to get involved and make a difference. You won’t just be changing the lives of others; you will be positively enhancing your own.

Thank you for entrusting me with the leadership of the Lancaster SHRM organization these past two years. I know the organization is in excellent hands as John Shoff steps into the role of President and I am confident he will take Lancaster SHRM to the next level!

I hope everyone has a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season!

Sincerely,

Jen Strobel

President’s Message- November 2024

November 1, 2024 by Rebecca Wood

Legacy and Why It Matters

As I approach the end of my term as President of Lancaster SHRM, I have found myself reflecting on the idea of legacy. Legacy isn’t about accolades or recognition—it’s about the lasting impact we leave on those around us. It’s about the culture we help shape and the paths we create for others to follow.

In our work as HR professionals, we’re constantly shaping the future of our organizations. Every decision we make, every policy we influence, and every person we mentor contributes to a broader legacy. A personal goal of mine has always been to leave an organization better than I found it. Whether we realize it or not, we are part of something bigger than ourselves. This is what gets me out of bed every day.

Why does legacy matter? Because it’s how we create continuity. It is how we ensure that the positive changes we have worked hard to establish continue long after we have moved on. It is how we inspire future generations to take up the mantle and continue the good work. I sincerely hope I have laid a strong foundation for others to thrive.

I encourage each of you to think about the legacy you’re building. What impact are you having on your team, your colleagues, and your community? What do you want to be remembered for? And how can you start shaping that legacy today? I hope you find these questions as exciting and inspiring as I do. I wish you well on your individual journeys.

I hope everyone has a wonderful and joyous Thanksgiving holiday!

All my best,

Jen

President’s Message- October 2024

October 14, 2024 by Rebecca Wood

Gratitude and Appreciation

As we enter fall and the season of change, I have been reflecting on how much I enjoy the change of seasons. I realized it is because I appreciate what has just passed and I am excited about what is to come. As I parlayed those thoughts into the work world, I think it is important to remember the impact of gratitude. Gratitude is more than just a polite ‘thank you.’ It’s about recognizing the contributions of others and the positive role they play in our lives.

Gratitude fosters connection and builds relationships. In the workplace, it strengthens relationships and builds trust, leading to a more collaborative and engaged environment. Taking the time to express appreciation not only boosts morale and reinforces a culture of support and recognition, but it also feels good!

As we near the end of the year, I encourage each of you to reflect on those who have helped you grow, who have supported you, and who have made a difference in your life. And don’t just reflect—reach out and express your gratitude. It could be a simple note, a quick email, or a face-to-face conversation. Gratitude costs nothing, yet it holds immeasurable value.

At Lancaster SHRM, I am continually reminded of the power of appreciation, whether it is the efforts of our volunteers, the insights shared by our speakers, the commitment of sponsors, or the engagement of each of you at our events. THANK YOU!

With heartfelt gratitude,

Jen

President’s Message- September 2024

September 6, 2024 by Rebecca Wood

Hello Lancaster SHRM!

We snapped our fingers and just like that it’s September! Back to school, traditional work schedules, and the unofficial end of summer. The month kicks off with Labor Day, a day that signifies the contributions, strength, and resilience of the American workforce. Originating in the late 19th century during the height of the Industrial Revolution, Labor Day emerged from the struggles of workers seeking fair wages, reasonable hours, and safe working conditions. It stands as a testament to the labor movement’s enduring impact, securing the rights and protections we often take for granted today.

In the modern workplace, the spirit of Labor Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing responsibility in HR to advocate for our employees’ well-being. Whether through fostering inclusive work environments, promoting fair compensation, or ensuring safety and work-life balance, the values that Labor Day represents are deeply embedded in human resource practices. The legacy of those who fought for labor rights continues to inspire us to build workplaces that meet the needs of today’s employees and pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous future.

In the spirit of appreciating and continuing to build a sustainable workforce, LSHRM is hosting and supporting several events this September throughout the area. Sherman Lancaster & I look forward to seeing you at an event soon!

All our best,

Jen & Sherman

President’s Message- August 2024

August 28, 2024 by Rebecca Wood

Hello Lancaster SHRM!

The dog days of summer are here, and it feels like many of us are searching for some respite. Whether it is the heat, humidity, political climate, stress at work, or the challenges of home and daily life, pressure is mounting.

These pressures amplify in the Human Resources field as we HR professionals find ourselves at a critical juncture. The recent mantra from employers has been to encourage employees to bring their authentic selves to work. Simultaneously, leaders and managers have inspired and empowered employees to voice their opinions. This shift has led to a unique juxtaposition: fostering a culture of openness and authenticity while managing the complexities that arise when employees express themselves on contentious issues, often unrelated to work.

HR leaders are tasked with navigating this new terrain particularly on topics like politics, social justice, and personal beliefs. To ban these discussions is not only impractical but also legally risky, so HR professionals are challenged to find a balance.

LSHRM’s upcoming Fall Legal Conference will explore strategies for HR professionals to serve as a beacon of civil discourse, promoting respect and understanding across diverse perspectives. This includes understanding the legal landscape and avoiding potential pitfalls with the sage advice of Jonathan Segal, a partner at Duane Morris LLP in the Employment, Labor, Benefits and Immigration Practice Group.

Join us on Friday, September 20th at the IU13 to learn how to navigate these challenges and build a harmonious workplace where employees feel heard and valued, without compromising the company’s inclusive and respectful culture.

Stay cool! As always, I look forward to seeing you soon!

My best,

Jen

President’s Message- July 2024

July 12, 2024 by Rebecca Wood

As we celebrate the birth of our country, often thought of as a melting pot of cultures and nations, and in Pennsylvania in particular where about 1 in 14 residents is an immigrant, it seems fitting that the July 11th Workforce Lunch and Learn discussion will be around Hiring and Immigration.

With Lancaster, PA unanimously approving the ‘Welcoming City’ immigration ordinance in February, 2024, this issue hits even closer to home.

The topic encapsulates the benefits and challenges that can significantly impact an organization. Immigrants and migrant workers can contribute to a diverse workforce, bringing unique perspectives, innovative ideas, and problem-solving approaches.

This diversity enhances creativity, drives business growth, and improves global market understanding. Additionally, immigrants often add value through strong work ethics and specialized skills that fill critical talent gaps, particularly in industries facing labor shortages.

However, hiring refugees, immigrants, or migrant workers can present challenges for HR professionals, primarily in the legal and regulatory compliance realm. Additional training and support may be required to overcome cultural and language barriers. Evaluating foreign educational credentials and professional licenses can also complicate the hiring process.

An essential function of the HR role is to address workplace bias and discrimination. This responsibility is critical to creating an inclusive environment where all employees (regardless of citizenship) can thrive.

Throughout this past year, LSHRM has shared insights from industry experts and county resources to assist members seeking to solve their workforce challenges.

I look forward to seeing you at breakfast on July 9th when we learn about Crisis Management and on July 11th for this very important discussion on Hiring and Immigration.

I hope everyone has a safe and Happy 4th of July celebration!

My best,

Jen
