HR 101 Workers Comp

HR 101: Workers Compensation by Matt Daggett and Bill Young

Workers’ compensation (WC) is a government-mandated, employer-paid insurance benefit for employees who are affected by a work-related injury or illness. WC provides wage replacement for time missed from work plus pays for medical expenses related to the work-related injury/illness.  All fifty states had WC laws in place by 1949.  The HR101 session on WC will cover laws, regulations, guidance, and interpretations presented by an attorney, and illustrated with example cases and scenarios.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:
1. Identify the basic principles and purpose of Worker’s Compensation
2. Determine how Worker’s Compensation affects work environments and conditions
3. Understand employer obligations regarding Worker’s Compensation
4. Know how to properly manage and communicate with employees and managers regarding Worker’s Compensation

HR101 is a 6-session series of programs designed for new HR professionals. The series will cover topics in the work cycle of employees, starting with Hiring, and later addressing FLSA/Wage and Hour, Recordkeeping/HRIS, Workers Compensation, OHSA, and Unemployment Compensation.  Each series event is approved for 1 credit hour: SHRM and HRCI.
