Legacy and Why It Matters
As I approach the end of my term as President of Lancaster SHRM, I have found myself reflecting on the idea of legacy. Legacy isn’t about accolades or recognition—it’s about the lasting impact we leave on those around us. It’s about the culture we help shape and the paths we create for others to follow.
In our work as HR professionals, we’re constantly shaping the future of our organizations. Every decision we make, every policy we influence, and every person we mentor contributes to a broader legacy. A personal goal of mine has always been to leave an organization better than I found it. Whether we realize it or not, we are part of something bigger than ourselves. This is what gets me out of bed every day.
Why does legacy matter? Because it’s how we create continuity. It is how we ensure that the positive changes we have worked hard to establish continue long after we have moved on. It is how we inspire future generations to take up the mantle and continue the good work. I sincerely hope I have laid a strong foundation for others to thrive.
I encourage each of you to think about the legacy you’re building. What impact are you having on your team, your colleagues, and your community? What do you want to be remembered for? And how can you start shaping that legacy today? I hope you find these questions as exciting and inspiring as I do. I wish you well on your individual journeys.
I hope everyone has a wonderful and joyous Thanksgiving holiday!
All my best,
Jen
