Poverty Simulation
Community Progress Council Poverty Simulation

As an HR professional, it’s important to understand the experiences of some of our employees and their families before they even walk through the door at work. Understanding these challenges can give you insight into creating workplaces that help empower employees instead of being another barrier to their success.

Join LSHRM and the Community Progress Council for an interactive Poverty Simulation on October 8th.

This hands-on learning opportunity for community members is extended by special invitation! Poverty simulations are a series of role-playing scenarios that give participants the opportunity to learn about the realities of poverty and its impact on society as a whole. Participants adopt a new persona and family profile for the purpose of the exercise. The outcome of the simulation is unpredictable and demonstrates how strategizing with limited resources can make the meeting even the most basic needs very challenging for a family. A poverty simulation can be a profoundly moving experience. It is thought-provoking and promotes insightful conversation about the realities of poverty. It demonstrates the importance of a community working together to address the problem of poverty. Most importantly, it inspires action and moves people to get involved in making a difference.

Learning Objectives – As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:
1. Define poverty and its effects on the community and workplace
2. Understand how poverty could affect job seekers as well as work performance and mental health of current employees
3. Gain awareness of programs and resources to decrease poverty, as well as workplace considerations to support employees in a poverty state

Community Progress Council

Community Progress Council works with low- and moderate-income people of all ages in York County to empower them to achieve self-sufficiency and live independent of public supports. We do this by serving the whole family through comprehensive, integrated services.

Resource Navigators serve as a central point of intake to complete a crisis assessment and connect people to supportive services, coaching, and other referrals. No matter your need, our Resource Navigators are the friendly faces you’ll work with first.

Progress toward self-sufficiency requires comprehensive services. Our programs provide stability and structure to empower people to identify long-term goals and support them on their journey to self-sufficiency.
