HR 101: Unemployment Compensation

HR101 is a 6-session series of programs designed for new HR professionals. The series will cover topics in the work cycle of employees, starting with Hiring, and later addressing FLSA/Wage and Hour, Recordkeeping/HRIS, Workers Compensation, OHSA, and Unemployment Compensation. Each series event is approved for 1 credit hour: SHRM and HRCI.

The UC 101 presentation provides knowledge about the Unemployment Compensation (UC) system, including the claims filing process, the determination process and appeal rights. This session will preview the forms that an employer may receive when a claim is opened, as well as discuss how they are used to determine the claimant’s eligibility and protect the employer’s liability. This also includes the specific time frame to respond to these forms and the importance of responding in a timely manner. So HR professionals can be prepared, the overall presentation will follow the process of opening an employee’s UC claim and the employer’s responsibilities regarding that claim, with focus on when should the employee open the claim, how is a UC claim filed, and what forms will be sent to the employer regarding the claim.

1. Understand the UC system purpose and processes
2. Understand the claim filing process and benefits eligibility requirements
3. Correctly complete UC forms that an employer may receive
4. Build a foundation of knowledge regarding the rights of all interested parties within the confines of UC Law

About the Speaker:Â Roberto Ortiz is the Workforce Development Representative for South-Central PA in the Department of Labor and Industry. In this role, he assists employers and employees with their Unemployment Compensation needs by conducting presentations and seminars in different media platforms and locations to include the local CareerLink offices. Roberto has been employed with the Commonwealth since 2020, and has a broad knowledge base as it relates to Unemployment Compensation laws and regulations. His previously held positions were Bi-lingual Intake Interviewer and Examiner. Roberto enjoys helping people and is a big believer in team building and working together to get the job done.
